What is the SPEEDBOX?

Speedbox

The SPEEDBOX is a non-contact speed sensor. The SPEEDBOX outputs a non-interpolated speed measurement comprised of integrated acceleration readings sampled and output at 200Hz, combined with GPS speed readings at 20Hz in order to eliminate the gradual drift characteristic of integrated acceleration with time. The SPEEDBOX uses Race Technology's very own high-accuracy GPS solution, optimised for speed measurement, which outperforms even top of the range ‘survey grade' GPS receivers in this respect. The unit provides a high accuracy 200Hz combined speed output in a variety of formats suitable for integration into most datalogging and display systems. CAN, RS232, analogue and pulse outputs are all provided as standard.

The SPEEDBOX avoids the inaccuracies, wear and calibration requirements of devices such as wheel speed sensors, requiring only a good view of the sky to give speed output typically 40 times more accurately than a calibrated wheel speed sensor.

Who is the SPEEDBOX designed for?

The SPEEDBOX is primarily designed for OEM testing and high-end motorsport applications, or anywhere a high accuracy real time speed measurement is required. OEM applications are not limited to the automotive industry; units are already in use in the rail industry and other applications have been identified.

By the very nature of OEM and high-end autosport testing, many users will require customisations from the standard specification. In particular, concerning the format or type of output required. Many customisations have already been carried out and depending on the potential for re-use others may be offered either free of charge or subject to a reasonable engineering charge.

What does the SPEEDBOX do?

The main feature of the SPEEDBOX is the 200Hz high accuracy speed output derived from combined accelerometer and GPS speed data. Key features of the SPEEDBOX include: -

  • High accuracy 200Hz speed output - The headline output of the unit. Inside the SPEEDBOX is a high precision dual axis silicon accelerometer. Readings from this unit are combined with the GPS speed output to give a 200Hz combined speed output with both high accuracy and fast dynamic response.
  • 20Hz GPS speed and position output - The GPS speed and position information is calculated and output at 20Hz.
  • 3 Axis acceleration measurements - Raw longitudinal and lateral acceleration data is output at 200Hz. The unit must be mounted correctly for this data to be accurate. A 6g accelerometer is fitted as standard, which is suitable for most OEM testing and motorsport applications.
  • Wide range of output formats - Available output formats include CAN, RS232 (RT format, UBLOX and NMEA), analogue and pulse. Custom output messages, such as NMEA over RS232, can be added on request.
  • Configurable - The SPEEDBOX is supplied with a PC-based configuration utility that allows details of the outputs to be configured. Full configuration instructions are provided.
  • Upgradeable firmware - The firmware of the SPEEDBOX is flash upgradeable through the serial port of a PC. Full instructions are provided.
  • Software and documentation - The SPEEDBOX is supplied with a comprehensive software CD providing full instructions for installation, configuration, use and output data processing (if required)

All SPEEDBOXs have the ability to detect speed in a forward and reverse direction, for example the graph below is a car reversing out from a car parking space and driving away at low speed. When reversing the speed is shown as negative.
