DL2 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the DL1 and the DL2?

There is a great deal of technology and features common to the DL1 and the DL2 products. The features unique to the DL2 include: more inputs, faster processor, higher accuracy GPS, higher vibration resistance, sealed for wet environments.

How often does the DL2 get speed/position updates?

Either 5 times every second or 20 times every second depending on specification. In either case the samples are real samples based on independent measurements taken from the GPS satellites, no interpolation is used.

Is there any interpolation on the 20Hz GPS speed updates?

No, the GPS system takes 20 independent measurements per second from each of the satellites in view and calculates 20 independent positions and speeds.

Is the 20Hz GPS receiver the same system I will find on other, more expensive, systems?

What is the relative accuracy/benefits of the different GPS options?

It’s impossible to quote absolute accuracies of GPS systems simply because accuracy depends on time of day, satellite coverage, weather, antenna mounting, tree and building coverage etc. However typical positional errors are 3m for the 5Hz system and 2m for the 20Hz system. The 20Hz system also has other performance benefits, for example almost instant GPS lock after a bridge over the track.

Is the DL2 fully waterproof?

The DL2 is sealed to IP65, this is defined as “Totally protected from dust, Protected from low pressure jets of water from all directions”

To what standards is the DL2 constructed?

Design tested to 25g at 20Hz-200Hz in all 3 axis for 24 hours, this exceeds military specification by approximately a factor of 4. Individual units tested for 5 minutes 25g in the vertical axis to detect manufacturing faults.

• Temperature. Design tested from -20°C to 70°C for 24 hours
• Electronic construction. Surface mount components, fibre glass PCB, machine assembled and reflow soldered. PCB 100% point to point tested for continuity and short circuits. Final PCB assembly visually inspected. The assembled unit is then calibrated, vibration tested, and then the calibration is independently verified on all channels. Finally all units are burnt in for 24 hours before a final re-test and inspection.
