video quality on youtube?

set it to high and created output file and looks good on the computer but seems to lose quality once loaded to youtube

is this normal?
never did direct to youtube option as it was just over ten mins and would not allow it

Andrew,

You always lose some quality when uploading to Youtube as it re-encodes the file at a lower bitrate. Youtube does use a better encoder for [what it thinks is] HD footagen so one way to improve how your video looks is to re-encode it before upload as 1280x720.

That is obviously widescreen format but you can either encode with the black borders or crop top and/or bottom to create a widescreen look.

This later option wont work with your current layout as you would either lose in-car/wheel pip or speed display but you could alter your layout to accommodate this OR if your software allows it, stretch the video.

Most of my videos I capture with enough 'dead space' so I can crop top & bottom. I don't do it exactly 16:9 as I think I little stretching actually looks good.

Loads of videos done this way on my site. They still PLAY at the same resolution as yours but you can see the encoding looks better. You do have the option to playback at 720p and you can really see a big difference then.
