Any updates on GoPro support?

Postby Peter Carroll/Toronto » Mon May 26, 2014 2:30 pm

Our customers are pretty keen on the GoPro support. Unfortunately, when a guy is building a new race car and new dash/datalogger hardware, they also tend to buy the latest greatest GoPro!

Has there been any new development re supporting the latest crop of GoPros? I understand you support the White on down. But what exactly is the issue with the newer models? Is it connectors? firmware? software?

Are these short term issues that might be solved in the future? Or is the hardware just not compatible?

If it's just the connector, would a custom cable solve it?

BTW: It would be nice if the RT GoPro cable could charge the camera. I know the dash/logger does not have enough power to do that. But having the wire in the cable for connection to an external power supply (7805=$1) would be very useful.

Thanks
Peter

A 7805 would dissipate a fair amount of heat, and would require a heat sink etc - how about using an LDO or, even better, use a switching regulator ?

Yes it would need to be switching regulator. We are looking at modifying the hardware on the DL1 CLUB to be able to provide enough power on at least one of the 5v ref outputs.

The issue with the GoPro cameras is that they just behave in the same way. On the ones we support you can connect a line to ground and it will toggle the status, on the other ones it requires different timing for this and so they aren't compatible. We contacted GoPro to ask them what the reasoning was for this and that it might help other developers as well as us if they could make them consistent and their answer was that they don't control the firmware, they basically just repackage a Chinese product.
