Speed calc

Is it possible to calculate the speed for display using the WSS/ECU speed up to 150 mph and GPS speed above that?
Seems to me I can use Variable Source to calculate the speed "from a combination of inputs using an equation" but does that mean I can use the variable value in an equation to calculate that variable value?
Could I perhaps set a lower numbered variable to the ECU speed and then calculate the ECU speed based on that variable and GPS speed. In this way the order of variable calculation should make this work.
Can anyone suggest any other solutions?
