Mods: can we do something about all the spammers?

Postby Steve Wynveen » Thu Dec 14, 2006 5:48 pm

It seems like there's been a strong upswing in lowlifes spamming the board in the last month or so. I check the forum using the "View posts since last visit" functionality, and lately it seems half the new messages are spam.

Is there anything the moderators can do to clean this up? Perhaps requiring approval of new members? Are the spammers getting banned, and can we please get their messages removed?

Thanks and happy holidays,
Steve

I have been through and deleted the spam. We are going to change the procedure for registration on the forum. It is on the list of jobs to do....

I'm administrator of a forum, and also had the problem with spam.

To solve this problem, I installed a bot on the server.
The name of the bot is Unique Registration Hash and info about it can be found here: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=430710

And to manage you members on a easy way I installed a bot that is called toolkit. With this you can delete or ban more users at the same time. Info about this one is here: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=232010

Guy, I don't know what can be done system side but I've been added as a moderator and I check in every day to help keep things cleaned up.

Hope that helps until a system side change weeds them out.

This problem seems to be getting worse - and the strange thing is all the other forums I use seem to have this issue sorted ...

Both Al & I agree it's getting worse. I delete at least 6 messages a day right now. Al is looking into extra registration security, so if you have suggestions post them up or send an email to Al.
