Gear selection wont register

Postby vmis » Mon Jun 18, 2007 8:46 am

I only get value of 1 in gear selection value. I have entered all gear ratios, final drive and wheel circumference and have no results over 20 odd runs. What have I missed.
thanks

I presume that you have solid speed and RPM traces, and the RPM is scaled correctly? And are running recent Analysis software?

Understood re data integrity.

Re V6, that's been out for a year+ including beta versions and lots of dot releases, etc. Can you give me the full info, ie 6.3.121 or ??

Hi,

Resurrecting this old topic. I searched through the whole forum and found a few topics on this. Still couldn't resolve this issue.

I have DL1 + Dash2 (Analysis software ver 7, if that helps)
RPM to DASH2 (works fine, no spikes, setup correctly)
GPS Speed from DL1 and looks to be correct
SPEEDOMETER YES via RS232
Gear ratios set via DASH2 config software, then downloaded to DASH2
ANA GEAR ON (forgot the exact wording on the DASH2 setup screen)

Most of the times the indicator shows I'm in R. But sometimes I see some flicker of a number there.

What am I not doing or doing wrong?

Thanks!

What gear ratio data are you actually using?

Can you type here exactly what you write in the config software? Gear ratios should be other type where 1st ~= 3.5, and not 0.28.

Same for final drive (your number will be around 3, not 0.something).

Wheel circumference will be in the region of 1.9m

Any major differences to this will cause problems. Probably. Maybe.

OK, I see what you mean, I will try it out tonight.

Thank you.

I have the numbers with me, and I think these were what went in:
1-3.5
2-1.956
3-1.258
4-0.946
5-0.78
final drive: 4.1

tire diameter: 1.87

I can double check, but are there any other options which I have to turn on either on the config software or DASH2?

I fixed the problem. It was a user error. I even described the error in my first post. ANA GEAR should be OFF. I think that's for analog signal via the pot installed in certain gearboxes.

Next problem:
When I'm in 5th, Dash2 sometimes flickers between 5 and 4. Is this due to inaccurate tire circumference value (estimate vs. actual, i.e. I got circumference from tire size calculation, not actual measurement). But why does it only happen in 5th gear?

Also what should one enter in the gear 6 and 7 if one doesn't have them?

Thank you.

If you had a problem with the tire size it would show up in 4/5 gear because these ratios are closer to each other than any other pair of gears. When I was doing my initial analysis of gear #, I found that my calculated tire diameter was about 5% larger than the empirical value I got when looking at the actual data.

To get a good estimated tire diameter, I created a user variable for the speed in each gear and compared this trace to the GPS speed trace. I would adjust the tire diameter until I got a very close match between these traces.

As a note, I put the ratios and tire diameter into car constants to simplify the speed in gear calculations.

as you can see from the adjacent post, I am having very similar problems .. is your's a bike or car engine? I have no idea if the extremely high revs is causing a problem but clearly it has worked (see post from Fraser) in car application ... not found anyone yet who has cracked it for a bike engine revving at 8-11000 all the time.
