Tyre pressure and temperature
Tyre pressure and temperature
The market is full of stand alone tyre pressure and temperature sensors. I was looking for sensors at Race-Technology but it seems nothing is available. Now, I wonder if anyone has anything installed, connected to DL1 and can share the experience.

These folks have a system that provides output for DAQ. I've not tried it myself.

We have 2 CS units fitted to our sports prototype, supplier here:
http://www.optris.com/
They aren't particularly cheap, and hence we have only 2! but we have 12 mounting positions (inside, middle and outside of tread) and can move them about fairly quickly.
They are fitted with an LED on the rear that can be set to trigger at any temp - we use 28degrees - which means you can check the focused position using body heat from a finger. They have a scalable analogue output so the resolution can be optimised, and once set up using a USB cable and software just plug straight into the DL1.
I'm not sure if the sensor's alarm function can be used to trigger an external warning light - this would be useful to let the driver know he has warmed the tyres enough to give him some confidence in the first few corners. I will see if this can be done over the winter.
So far we have only very limited testing on a private road, but the tyre temps instantly respond to acceleration and braking, and I anticipate that the data we will get on track will be very interesting.

About TMPS, I came across this system made by Brigthwater:
http://www.brightwater.co.uk/downloads.html
It seems that it can be ordered with CAN, RS-232 or analogue (0-5v) outputs for the data module, no idea about the price.
System can handle 4 tyres temperature and pressure. Bad news are that considering that the sole option to link the system with DL1 is via analogue output, you can't get both parameters in this way, although maybe it's possible to use two unit box -one for pressure, other for temperature- with the same tire valve sensors set...
Regards.
