Strange Oil Pressure Reading

When I turn the ignition on the oil pressure reads -11. Once the engine is running it seems to give a normal reading albeit bouncing around a bit but why -11?
Ok Ive now got the R/T oil pressure sensor and plug but when I start the engine the 'oil pressure' reading slowly climbs to around 53 and then seems to behave like a temp sensor with little sign of change regardless of engine revs etc.
I have the filtering at 0.1 rate of change and number of samples is 4.
I have selected the standard sensor and have scaling of y= +36.25x-18.12
