You teased us with the mention of your Video Synchroniser in the November newsletter: http://www.race-technology.com/video_synchroniser_2_30679.html

- How much is it? (US $ please)

- Can the LED be remote-mounted? My car is primarily used on the street, I'd much prefer a single LED mounted in a vent or similar (still in direct line of sight of the camera) than a block sitting on my dash.

- Is it a 2-point sync (start and end) or just a single point? Or is it sync'ing the video/data every time the light flashes?

I'm interested in this as well.

- do we also have to buy the "3rd party Video support"-licence (cost : 199 GBP + VAT) ?

I have received an answer to my Email.

Price for the Synchronizer is 75 GBP plus VAT.

And yes, you will also need to buy the Video Licence.

Hi can help with some of those questions:

The syncing system is either available to buy by itself, or as a package with the video licence.

The LED cannot be seperated from the main unit, however the main unit is already very compact, so it's not difficult to mount.

The software looks at the video, automatically finds where the LED is located in the picture and then identifies where is starts and stops flashing. Using this information it syncs the video and data.

There is more information available here:

Kind regards,

Support

So how much does it cost as a package with the video license? It sounds like it's 75 GBP standalone.

And if I prefer to use the free version of the video software (mostly so I can test if it works before paying for a video license), will it work with it?

Does the device connect directly to the DL1? If so, what terminal does it connect to?

According to the product page on the US-site:

The syncronizer is $120.

The 3rd party video software license is $299.

There is a combination special which includes both for $349.

I assume that the device connects to the serial port, and that it either has an integrated y-cable, or one is provided in the box?

It connects to the status output and power supply of the DL1, it lights up when the DL1 is logging data.

If the front of the DL1 is in the camera view, could the video software pick up the status LED on the DL1 and use it for synchronization?

No it can't use the status LED on the DL1. This isn't bright enough to be picked up by the software, and it doesn't flash fast enough. The synchronisation looks for areas of very high contrast between adjacent frames, so it needs to flash at about 10Hz. A bright LED on the front of the DL1 flashing at 10Hz would drive you nuts. The DL1 status LED doesn't change in brightness for day/night operation, so if it dim enough at night to work properly it would be too dim for the daytime, if it was bright enough for daytime operation it would be dazzling at night.
