SPEEDBOX Speed Sensor

Speedbox

The SPEEDBOX is a very high accuracy non-contact speed sensor that has been designed for professional automotive testing as well as other industrial and high-end motosport applications. It outputs a low latency, non-interpolated speed measurement comprised of GPS and inertial data combined using an adaptive filter for exceptional performance even in non-GPS ideal environments. Packaged in a high quality machined aluminium enclosure, it offers an extremely high reliability design based on our years of racing experience. The high accuracy speed measurement is output in a variety of forms suitable for integration into most datalogging and display systems; CAN, RS232, analogue and a fully configurable digital pulse output are all provided as standard.

The SPEEDBOX uses Race Technology's very own high accuracy 20Hz PurePhase GPS solution, optimised for speed measurement, which outperforms even top of the range 'survey-grade' GPS receivers in this respect. This unique GPS technology outperforms "GPS-only sensors", offering lower noise, lower latency and superior bandwidth, and is far more resistant to drop outs. It offers an ideal replacement/upgrade for 5th wheel, optical and gps-only sensors in a wide variety of automotive testing applications, including brake testing, chassis dynamics, accident reconstruction, tyre testing and stability management testing, to name but a few.

The SPEEDBOX avoids the inaccuracies, wear and calibration requirements of devices such as wheel speed sensors, requiring only a good view of the sky to give speed output typically 40 times more accurately than a calibrated wheel speed sensor.

SPEEDBOX-RTK Option: Real Time Slip Angle Measurement

Real time measurement of slip angle, the difference between the direction in which the vehicle is pointing (yaw) and travelling (heading), is one of the most challenging measurements to take, but also of great importance to vehicle dynamics engineers and others at the cutting edge of both auto-development and autosport.

SlipAngle

PitchGradient

The SPEEDBOX-RTK uses innovative cutting-edge "Moving Base Real Time Kinematics" GPS technology to accurately measure vehicle yaw and pitch 20 times per second. These parameters are calculated using very high accuracy position measurements from two separate GPS antennas. The relative positions of the two GPS antennas can be determined to within a few millimetres, so for a baseline distance of 1m between the two antennas (typical) the vehicle pitch and yaw can be calculated to an accuracy of a few tenths of a degree. Vehicle yaw and pitch are measured directly and do not require the vehicle to be moving. When the vehicle is moving, the heading is also measured by the GPS unit, and hence the slip angle can be calculated from the difference between the RTK yaw and the GPS heading.

The additional RTK option can either be specified at the time of ordering, or a standard SPEEDBOX can be factory-upgraded to SPEEDBOX-RTK specification. Full details of the RTK unit and its principles of operation can be found on the SPEEDBOX-RTK product page.
