RPM feed started playing up - shows 7,000 RPM all the time..

My DL1 has been installed for a few years and I have never had RPM problems until recently, and nothing has been changed....
The feed from the ECU is joined to two wires, one to the DL1 and one to my shift lights. The shift lights still work perfectly but the DL1 now shows an incorrect trace. It isn't constant, but it is generally between the 7-8K range, changing relatively slowly (the car redlines at 7,200).
Yes, I can strip the wiring and rewire it, but before I do that, any suggestions as to what causes this sort of issue?
