Adaptor or fitting for m12x1.5 temp sensors?

Postby adambrouillard » Thu Jan 19, 2012 3:50 pm

Has anyone found a place that sells adapters or t fittings to plug the m12x1.5 temp sensors into?

Anyone, anyone? I can't be the only one who has ever bought a temp sensor from them.

I use eguages.com or Pegasus Racing for fittings - or my local hardware store. Pegasus racing has a pretty extensive catalog of fittings, including Brit Standard stuff.

That's for US sellers - where are you?

I'm also interested in knowing this. I want to install the RT oil temperature sensor to a female 1/8 NPT fitting (on a sandwich adaptor plate).

I live in the US. I've check pegasus, and a ridiculous amount of other places. I'm resorting to just tapping my own threads. The really need to get 1/8 npt sensors for us US folk.

I potted a LM19 temperature sensor into a VDO brass case for temp sensors. The LM19 is ~$1 each at Digikey and the VDO sensor is ~$9 or so. Use a torch to melt out the guts then use a high metal content epoxy to glue the sensor in the bottom of the brass case. I used stiff heat shrink to provide some strain relief to the wires.

The two I have installed have lasted ~5 years in service.

The nice thing about the LM19 is that it has a decent range and resolution, it linear, is three wire (power, ground and signal - don't need to mess with a resistor pull up network) and it's cheap. There are others available as well.

I'm with osborni - I get my senders from egauges.com (actually not too far from me). I tend to prefer the VDO senders, based on my success (durability) with them in my Porsche (OEM fitment).

Likewise, yes, for adapters, local HW store if brass is OK, or either Pegasus or even McMaster-Carr for lighter and aluminum stuff. Or sometimes weld-on bungs are preferable, I find HRP Racing has a pretty good selection - just got a coolant temp switch and Al bung from them for a warning light (though it's a bit of a monster at 1/2 NPT!).

Also note, if you have access to a lathe or even a local engineering shop, a 12 x 1.5mm can be turned down and re-threaded to 1/8NPT.
Surprisingly, most engineering text will show that it wont work since the theoretical minor diameter of a 12 x 1.5 thread is smaller than the major diameter of 1/8NPT, however I have machined many bosch sensors this way and they all clean up with perfect threads.

I suppose I have to send an email to sales[at]race-technology?
