What is the SPEEDBOX20?
The SPEEDBOX20 is a high accuracy, GPS-based, non-contact speed sensor that has been designed for professional automotive testing as well as other industrial and high-end motorsport applications. It outputs a non-interpolated speed measurement at 200Hz using combined data from accelerometers and GPS. The SPEEDBOX20 combines the best features of accelerometer data at 200Hz with GPS data at 20Hz to produce speed and position outputs with very high accuracy, fast dynamic response and excellent stability. Outputs are provided in RS232, CAN, analogue and pulse formats. The SPEEDBOX20 is also compatible with Race Technology dashboards such as the DASH1 and DASH2 if a real time in-vehicle display is required.
Who is the SPEEDBOX20 designed for?
The SPEEDBOX20 is primarily designed for OEM testing and high-end motorsport applications, or anywhere a high accuracy real time speed measurement is required. OEM applications are not limited to the automotive industry; units are already in use in the rail industry and applications for other transport sectors are currently being developed.
Why use GPS?
One of the key features of the SPEEDBOX20 is its built in high accuracy GPS system - this gives the SPEEDBOX20 significant advantages over other 'conventional' speed measuring devices. The normal way to measure speed is to simply attach a pickup to a wheel to detect how fast it is rotating - but the rolling circumference of a tyre changes by 4% just with wear and temperature. Even worse, the error increases significantly under race conditions when the tyre is under heavy loads - typically the tyre slips by up to 20% under hard braking before entering a corner. Measuring speed using GPS is now common practice in high-end systems - under typical operating conditions speed error is well under 1%.
