Introduction

The Video Playback application allows you to view the video footage that you have recorded. It is simple to use and is not dependent on any particular "codecs" being installed on the users machine.

Video playback control panel

Following playback controls allows you to navigate through the video footage and resizing of video window.

Open video - Opens a video file.
Change video window size - The button on the left toggles between Full screen and Window mode. The button on the right allows you to toggle the video window size between Full (100%) and half size (of original video size).
Capture frame - Takes a snapshot of the running video.
Rewind (quickly) - This button will allow you to quickly rewind through the video.
Pause - This button will pause the video.
Rewind (slowly) - This button allows you to rewind through the video footage in slow motion.
Back One Frame - This button allows you to move backwards through the video, one frame at a time.
Play - This button plays the video in real time.
Forward One Frame - This button allows you to move forwards through the video, one frame at a time.
Forward (slowly) - This button allows you to move forwards through the video footage in slow motion.
Fast forward - This button allows you to move quickly forwards through the video.
Mute - This button allows you to mute the sound on the video. To un-mute it, simply re-press the button.

Keyboard shortcuts

Following keyboard shortcuts allow you to move forward or backword through the video.

CTRL + Top Arrow - move forward, 1 frame at a time

CTRL + Down Arrow - move backword, 1 frame at a time

CTRL + Right Arrow - move forward, 10 frames at a time

CTRL + Left Arrow - move backword, 10 frames at a time

Troubleshooting Video Playback

When you play a video on a portable computer, the video may play slower than the video camera's capabilities. Additionally, the preview video may be garbled, jerky, and inconsistent in its motion or stopped suddenly without any clear reason.

This behaviour may occur due to following reasons:

  • Power management affect laptop video playback performance. For example, some power-management technologies used by modern portable computers, such as Intel's SpeedStep technology and AMD's PowerNow! Technology permit the processor to run at reduced core voltages and clock frequencies. When you change the processor performance state, access to system memory is temporarily blocked. As a result, streaming devices dependent on accessing memory may be starved for data, resulting in glitches or drop-outs in playback.
  • When you run a mobile processor in a reduced-performance mode, this may not provide enough processing power to properly render a video stream.
  • When the processor performance mode changes dynamically, it may interfere with video playback.
  • Switching your system power source from alternating current (AC) to battery power.
  • Other system activity may also affect video playback. Video playback performance is very CPU intensive. As a result, if you run other applications while attempting to view video on your laptop, you might significantly degrade the playback performance.

To resolve the video playback issues in portable computers, use the following guidelines.

  • When video or audio playback is in progress, do not switch the portable computer from AC power to battery power.
  • Use the applet or configuration utility provided by your system vendor to select a setting that does not allow the processor speed to change. If video playback performance is compromised by running a processor at a low speed, select the highest speed available. See your system manufacturer's documentation for details about changing these settings.

Note: After you finish viewing your video, it is better to adjust the power mode or processor mode to a lower setting to preserve battery life.
