Mounting The Unit In The Vehicle

Where the main logger body also contains the accelerometers (DL1/DL2/AX22), it is important that it is mounted on a flat, fairly level surface in the vehicle. A small amount of tilt can be compensated for in the software, however, large tilt angles cause loss of resolution and increased noise due to vertical vibration.

Instructions on compensating for accelerometer tilt

Just as importantly, the logger must be mounted "squarely" in the vehicle with the buttons facing towards the back of the vehicle. If the unit is mounted out of square, then the unit will be measuring longitudinal accelerations when you are cornering and vice versa. Acceleration errors caused by mounting the unit out of square cannot be compensated for, so it is important to get it right.

Please, take a few minutes to read the following sections:

Fitting the DL1/DL2

If the logger is to be fitted permanently in the vehicle, the DL2 has four M4x8 tapped blind holes on the sides of the unit for fitting right angle brackets etc. If the logger is to be fitted temporarily, then it is best to use the same BluTak™ or Velcro™ method as for the DL90.

Fitting the AX22

There are 2 recommended methods of fitting the AX22 into the vehicle: for permanent installation you can use the aluminium brackets which slot down the side of the main unit. These brackets can then be bolted down to a suitably flat, level surface. For temporary installations, you can use the high strength suction cup. The suction mount can be reliably fitted to all slippery surfaces e.g. glass, metal, enamel, plastics. To securely fasten the suction pad, lift the lever and press firmly, then push the lever down. To open, loosen the lever and lift the tongue on the suction pad. When fitting the suction cup it may also be advisable to moisten the rim. Also, ensure that the surface you are attaching to is clean.

Note that the AX22 must be mounted with the buttons facing directly towards the rear of the vehicle NOT angled towards the driver for the reason highlighted in the section above.

Finally, please note that because the Ax22 uses a LCD it is more sensitive to extremes of vibration and temperature, so please bear this in mind when locating it.

"WARNING": To avoid any possible damage to the car paintwork, please take care when mounting magnetic GPS antennas. In particular make sure that there are no dust or grit under the antenna. In some cases it maybe required to add additional protection to the paintwork prior to mounting the antenna to avoid damage.
